Govt to intensify fight against rhino killing

Pretoria - Government continues to explore ways to curb the increasing killing of rhinos in South Africa, including the possibility of dehorning the animals, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Sunday.

About 24 rhinos have been killed in South Africa since the beginning of this month, while figures from the South African National Parks (SANPARKS) show that 448 rhinos were killed for their horns last year alone. The most affected areas were said to be in Limpopo and North West provinces.

Experts say the spike in poaching in Africa and South Asia was largely caused by increased demand for rhino horns in Asian traditional medicine. There are still many myths associated with the rhino horn in some Asian countries like China and Vietnam, where it is believed that the horn can heal fever, enhance sexual performance and reduce chances of stroke.

Molewa said it was clear that authorities needed to up their game in curbing the poaching of rhinos.

"It is clear that this is an organised crime and in dealing with organised criminals, we need input and action from all South Africans."

She said a study conducted had indicated that the decision on whether or not to dehorn a rhino population depended on a number of factors, including the level of poaching threat, the availability of funds and the size of the rhino population in question.

"Due to the invasive nature of and expenses associated with dehorning, the intervention should only be considered under conditions of relatively severe poaching threat," Molewa said.
A continuing study commissioned by government will also look into whether legalising trade in rhino horn could help to bring down poaching.

Other measures include the establishment of the National Wild Life Reaction Unit, which authorities are hoping will help in information sharing and curbing pooching in South Africa's largest parks.
Molewa said the South African National Defence Force has also been returned to monitor the 350-kilometre of the national border in Kruger National Park. Most of the country's rhinos are found in Kruger Park, leading to many cases of poaching being reported there.

While the alarming figures of rhino killing in the country had raised concerns among animal rights groups and activists, SANPARKS said it was not yet time to press panic buttons.

According to the organisation's CEO David Mabuza, there are around 22 000 rhinos in South Africa, accounting for 93 percent of the world's rhino population. The rhino population is said to be growing at a rate of six percent a year.

"So while all of us should be worried, it should be noted that the killings have not yet threated the rhino population in general. But if we continue at this rate (of killing), we will start seeing a decline by 2015," Mabuza said.

SANPARKS needs about 1 600 additional rangers to patrol in the Kruger National Park but this would mean an addition R200 million in the budget.

Rangers Killed in the line of excuting their duties

Many Facebook Groups has popped up criticising the authorities for not doing enough against poaching. In a country where poverty and education is a great human famine Conservation is a luxury.   Slandering the people protecting will not help and none of these groups distribute the anti crime/poaching hot lines. They are in an emotional mess and keep posting horrendous photos of slaughtered Rhinos.

One of these Groups Owners/Administrators Ruth Hughes  does not have much control over her group and she let people rant and rive their criticism against hunters, conservation authorities and people opposing their views. She does not exercises any moderation except from block/ban of opinionated individuals standing up for Hunting and relevant Authorities.

Interesting article, thank you.

Regarding the FB Groups, I might not always agree with all the statements made but at least people are waking up. Most people feel utterly helpless and frustrated about this issue. Give them a chance to blow off some steam instead of taking matters into their own hands. I am more concerned about vigilantes than excess steam. We are not all journalists with a podium like this, but we can voice our opinions freely and democratically. I would like to urge people to act with integrity, respect other opinions, be sure of your facts and keep the focus on protecting, saving our rhinos and other wildlife.

Ruth Huges is a dear friend and a respectable lady and does not deserve this personal attack. She is also not the only moderator of this group. No one anticipated this huge sudden outcry and a firm group policy is now in place.
S.O.R Group Policy:
We do not allow promoting of Businesses (unless approved by Admin) or any other groups on this page
No bad language or insulting of any member will be allowed.
Collecting or promoting of Organizations to collect funds will not be allowed.
We are not anti anyone and feel contributions from all who are concerned about Rhino and the welfare of them...

I trust that we can all work together as one nation to save and protect our wildlife for the next generations.

Morning

Well she allows lob sided attacks on individuals and emotional photos and does not give a fair view. Our Government are stuck with poverty and a un ruling youth. We carry on as if we are the only people that matter and care little about the other.

If you are no Journalists you should not wield a powerful weapon like facebook. What i said here is very very mildly put considering the tools I have at my disposal.

Sorry it hurts that much ... but maybe people must realise the power they wield ... and stop feeling sorry for them self ...

You state you are scared of vigilantes ... please be sure the emotions invoked by these facebook groups will lead to vigilantly attacks.

See www.forafrica.co.za/wp ... it should be proof enough ...

Ciske ... for one I was well slandered on the said Group where said person is the administrator. If a person or group administrator or administrators provoke public emotion they will receive retaliation.

Group Administrators Should Take Responsibility over ...

1) Integrity of Information.
2) Curb Emotional out burst ... Vigilantes are born from rampant emotional out brakes.
3) Make sure the Group stay on topic.

I will not let Anti Poaching groups abuse peoples emotion in the hight of a national poaching problem to exercise pressure to stop hunting or invoke emotions against hunting.

We are all user groups and we all have a responsibility towards a democratic society. I will use my Tools against one track minded Colonialist mentality ... we share a beautiful country let us do it fair and equal ... like respectable adults ...
