Marine and Coastal Management suspends three officials on allegations of fraud

8 March 2010

The Department of Environmental Affairs’ branch, the Marine and Coastal Management has suspended three officials on allegations of fraud.

The three officials were suspended last week for allegedly colluding in defrauding the Marine Living Resources Fund, by diverting donor funds from the Marine Fisheries Cooperation between Norway and South Africa (NORSA) programme into a private account.

The fraudulent transactions were picked up by our internal system and action immediately taken when the implicated officials could not produce supporting documentation for the transactions. Marine and Coastal Management will follow an internal disciplinary action against the implicated officials and will also hand over the matter to the police for criminal investigations.
