Piet Plessis housing shortage addressed

Life for the people of Piet Plessis in the far western corner of the North West province is set to change with the provision of housing by the provincial government and its stakeholders.

This rural village, which depends on agriculture for its economic base has an estimated 248 households, 111 of which are formal while 138 are shacks, plastic and mud makeshift houses.

At least 76 houses will be built in this rural village through the National Women's Build programme of which the North West province is a member.

The National Women's Build programme undertakes the initiative in commemoration of the women's march of 1956. The same number of houses (1 956) will be built by women contractors to address housing shortages around the province.

According to Premier Maureen Modiselle, the commencement of the programme could not have come at a better time.

"As government we reiterate the importance of working together to do more," she said.

Piet Plessis was declared the premier's special project during her visit to the town during April this year.

During her State of the Province Address, Modiselle said her government would be rolling out a rural industry development programme as a means of ensuring that the people get employed at their own villages.

She also put emphasis on the positive results of the provincial War on Poverty programme which was launched in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district some months ago.

The first delivery of the houses in the North West province will be done during the Women's Month in August.
