Minister Sicelo Shiceka meets South Africa Auditor-General to fast track municipal clean audits

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Sicelo Shiceka met Auditor-General Terence Nombembe on a joint media briefing that was in Pretoria on 18 June 2010.

The purpose of the meeting was to announce the consolidated general report on the local government audit outcomes for the financial years 2008/09.

As part of its mandate, The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is charged with the responsibility of coordinating the delivery of municipal services to the people and to ensure that sector departments and all relevant stakeholders cooperate in making service delivery a reality.

Further to this, the department has an even challenging role of ensuring that all South African municipalities are delivering quality services, which means that critical issues including governance, financial management systems and skills development need to be taken seriously.

In view of the important role played by municipalities, the department has committed to guide all the country's 283 municipalities towards clean audit reports by 2014.

It is against this background that Minister Sicelo Shiceka had met South Africa's Auditor-General, Terence Nombembe to address a joint media briefing on how South Africa's municipalities have performed in the 2008/09 financial year, what were the successes, problem areas identified and their root causes and what action needs to be taken to remedy the situation to ensure clean audits before and beyond 2014.
