MEC Sebego calls for calm in Reivilo

16 Feb 2011

The North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Paul
Sebego has deployed departmental officials to Reivilo near Taung, in a
bid to respond to issues which led to unrests experienced yesterday in
the area.

Meanwhile, MEC Sebego has appealed for peace and calm in the area to
allow a proper consultation process to unfold.

Residents of Reivilo, Boipelo Township and surrounding farms led by the
Reivilo Demarcation Forum took to the streets in violent protests which
resulted in an altercation between the group and members of the South
African Police Services (SAPS). The community demands for their locality
to be incorporated into the Northern Cape province.

"The department is worried about the intensified protest action by the
community of Reivilo and surrounding areas and we call on them to
exercise patience and restraint. Government appreciates community
participation in governance processes, however, protesters should avoid
violent disorder which often leads to illegal actions," Sebego said.
