Donating blood saves lives

27 Jan 2012

As parts of the Eastern Cape Department of  Transport’s commitment to donate blood on quarterly basis, the department’s Wellness unit hosted the first stage of Blood Banks’ annual blood donation drive on 27 January 2012 at Stellenbosch Park building in King William’s Town.

“Blood can be used for countless purposes, not just surgeries or for people who are in accidents. Donated blood is commonly used for helping women who are having complications during child birth, to mention one,” said Sindiswa Magwebu who is a Wellness unit manager.

She explained that Blood bank prefers people with a minimum age of 16 years, weight of 50kg, have had a meal in the last four hours before donating, one must be in good health and lead a safe sexual life.

Blood donation can also have some health benefits for the donor, according to Magwebu people with high iron content can help level it out by giving blood and in that way a person will become aware of his/her blood pressure levels and HB levels.

"It's the best generosity you can do, we're not asking you to write a check, but to do something very personal, that has a direct impact on someone life," Magwebu said.

Donation appointments can be made at www.sanbs.org.za or by calling Toll free number 0800 11 9031 or on Facebook & Twitter.
