The Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana, will participate in Friday’s march against attacks on females wearing miniskirts.
Earlier this year, the Minister strongly condemned an incident where two women wearing short skirts were attacked and assaulted at the Noord Street Taxi Rank in central Johannesburg.
Throwing her weight behind the march called by the ANC Women's League, the Minister called on all people and organisations to support the march. She applauded COSATU for its firm support and urged other organisations to follow COSATU's example. “Through this march, we are reclaiming our streets from those who abuse and terrorise women and children”, said the Minister
“The scourge of women abuse threatens to erode many of the hard-earned gains of the liberation struggle. It denies women their birth rights. It condemns them to a life of fear and prevents them from being productive members of society”.
The march will start at 14:00 Friday, 17 February 2012 from Bree Street Taxi Rank, proceed to Noord Street Taxi Rank and hand over the Memorandum at the Equality Court (South Gauteng High Court, Pritchard Street).
