Deputy Minister Fransman leads humanitarian mission to Madagascar

12 Mar 2012

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Marius Fransman, will travel to Madagascar on Tuesday, 13 March 2012, to hand over humanitarian aid to Madagascar in response to the devastation caused by the recent cyclone Giovanna and tropical storm Irina.

Deputy Minister Fransman is the Chair of the  Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika and serves as President Zuma's Special Envoy on Madagascar.

Several aid organisations contributed and pledged aid and assistance to the mission. These include the Al-Imdaad Foundation that contributed aid worth US$ 100 000 in the form of blankets, water-purification tablets, tents and food hampers; as well as Netcare that assisted with logistical arrangements.

The Norwegian Government has contributed to the humanitarian project by making the transportation of the aid to Madagascar possible.

Whilst in Madagascar, Deputy Minister Fransman is expected to meet with the Malagasy stakeholders with a view to address certain outstanding aspects pertaining to the full implementation of the SADC roadmap.
