Blade runner makes history at London Olympics

Pretoria - Oscar Pistorius made history at the London 2012 Olympics on Saturday by becoming the first amputee athlete to compete in an athletics event at the Olympic Games.

The double amputee finished second in his first-round heat in the men's 400 meter sprint, qualifying in the first of seven heats for Sunday night's semifinals in London.

Long-jumper Khotso Mokoena has meanwhile crashed out of the London Olympics. South Africa had high hopes for him after he won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing games four years ago.

On Friday night swimming sensation Chad le Clos clinched a silver medal in the 100 metre butterfly event. All eyes were on le Clos following his gold medal win on Tuesday, but it was the USA's Michael Phelps who won the race.

Le Clos' silver medal adds to the three gold medals South Africa has achieved at the London 2012 Olympics thus far.

South Africa's men's lightweight rowing team clinched gold on Thursday, while Cameron van der Burgh set a new world record in the 100m breaststroke and le Clos won in the 200m butterfly swimming event on Tuesday. - SAnews.gov.za
