North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa, was on Thursday noon part of the police raid at Flame and Lantern Hotels dubbed "Lagos" in the Klerksdorp central business district during which drugs were seized.
Twenty two packets of dagga and 22 crack cocaine pipes were discovered by police members of the Klerksdorp Crime Combating unit hidden in the ceiling of a Flame Hotel room. The operation was part of the 2010 Firearm Amnesty outreach campaign final push ahead of the Sunday, 11 April 2010 deadline for the amnesty period.
The outreach campaign, led by MEC Yawa in partnership with City of Matlosana, the Southern District Taxi Council and the Klerksdorp cluster community policing forum (CPF), covered Khuma, Jouberton, Klerksdorp and Kanana.
Chairperson of Khuma extension street patrollers, Anna Melato (44), says that the patrollers will as part of their crime prevention initiative embark on a door to door campaign to mobilise the community to surrender illegal firearms and report people with illegal firearms.
City of Matlosana Executive Mayor, Ofentse Mogale is confident that the campaign will contribute towards reducing violent crime involving firearms
