Department delivers more than 16 000 houses

3 June 2010

The Department of Human Settlements in the North West Province has constructed 16,557 houses. This is was revealed by the MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, during the presentation of her budget speech at the North West Provincial Legislature this morning.

Mohono said even though the department had not reached its intended target, the department has succeeded, given the challenges that confront the department. MEC Mohono said that the department spent about R1.1 billion, which is 99.8 percent of the total allocation in the previous financial year.

She said that there were many demands and needs that cannot always be accommodated because of the budgetary constraints. “Despite the many constraints that confront us, our programme to deliver sustainable human settlements remains firmly on track,” said Mohono.

For this financial year, the department has been allocated R1.4 billion, including a conditional grant of R1.2 billion for this financial year. She said that she is hopeful that her department will spend the current budget appropriately just like in the previous financial year. “We are confident that the same expenditure pattern will continue during the current financial year as part of our collective effort to expand the frontiers of human fulfilment and to ensure the realisation of our national vision which was so eloquently in the Freedom Charter: “There shall be houses, security and comfort for all,” she said!
