Safely home weekend blitz: 64 drunk drivers arrested

30 May 2010

The integrated Safely Home traffic blitz on provincial roads saw 64 people arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, pushing the total number of those arrested for the offence to 193 at the end of the first month of a three month operation.

Road blocks and vehicle check points, in line with the province's Safely Home campaign, again proofed to be very successful in bringing drunk drivers to book.

A total of 22 Safely Home integrated roadblocks were held over the weekend with the focus placed on drunk drivers and 1 032 drivers were tested, as we must change the behaviour of driving under the influence.

These arrests form part of our ‘Safely Home’ campaign to bring down carnage on our road. Further to the alcohol arrests, 368 traffic fines for various offences were issued to the value of R251 800.

Those who keep on violating the rules and the laws of the road will not get away with it. The Department of Community Safety will continue having these operations in order to make our Provinces roads safer.
