Statement by Dan Plato Western Cape MEC of Community Safety: results of safely home weekend traffic operations

15 Aug 2011

This weekend's alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a
total of 2959 vehicles stopped as part of the Provincial Government's
Safely Home Campaign.

Six hundred and five (605) speeding offences were recorded.

Eight hundred and twenty eight (828) drivers were screened for driving
under the influence of alcohol resulting in 27 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West at
1,49mg/1000ml. A total of 365 fines were issued.

In Vredenburg four people were arrested for the possession of dagga and
one person was also apprehended for stock theft.

Two people were also arrested for the possession of tik in Beaufort West.

On Sunday morning a 31 year old man travelling from George to Knysna
lost his life on the N2 outside Sedgefield. The man lost control of his
vehicle which then overturned and collided with a tree.

Our safely home integrated operations every weekend by Provincial
Traffic, Municipal Traffic and South African Police Service (SAPS) are
increasing safety on our roads and we also aim to ultimately change the
behaviour of drivers to act responsibly and within the law at all times.
It is clear that those who don't will face the consequences.

Any traffic violation can and should be reported to our 24 hour control
room on 021 931 1646. Our officers may just be able to intercept a
dangerous situation and save a life.
