The North West Provincial Government has made a steady progress towards addressing housing backlog in the province, North West Premier, Thandi Modise declared in her State of the Province Address delivered in Mahikeng on Friday.
Addressing members of the Provincial Legislature and over 3500 invited guests at the North West University’s Great Hall, Premier Modise said the province had moved from the 249 000 housing backlog to 207 000.
Modise said the people of the North West continue to show confidence in the achievements made since 1994.
“Our people are confident that we shall do more and we will continue to lead them into a future and dignity and respect.
“We are on our way to bring the services they are awaiting and to improve the quality of what they are already getting,” said Modise.
Access to housing is one of the government priorities to ensure that everyone has the right to have adequate housing as stipulated in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
To achieve this, the Premier further announced that the provincial government would, this year, commence with the rental stock programme, which aims to facilitate the provision of secure, stable rental tenure for lower income persons and provides a coherent framework for dealing with many different forms of existing public sector residential accommodation.
The programme targets persons and households earning between R800 and R3 500 per month, who could not be accommodated in the formal private rental and social housing market.
