A maintenance unit is to be re-established within the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport to focus on maintenance of public infrastructure, North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise announced during the State of the Province Address delivered in Mahikeng on Friday.
Premier Modise said that existing staff will be assisted to repolish skills for them to recover high morale. A new unit head is to be appointed to lead the unit.
In assuring Members of the Provincial Legislature that her provincial administration is fixing the department, the Premier said that disciplinary processes for senior managers on suspension for their involvement in the Koster-Lichtenburg road rehabilitation project tender irregularities are about to commence.
Modise said that as part of the intervention in the department, some tenders have had to be withdrawn and investigations into other matters such as the scholar transport instituted.
The Premier announced the secondment of secondment of personnel to the department by the Minister of Public Works and others from the Eastern Cape and said that the provincial administration is finalising the head-hunting process for the Head of Department.
She committed her administration to corruption free administration and commented the Provincial Anti-Corruption Forum led by Bishop Matebesi for working hard to advocate for good governance, administration build on a system of good values and beliefs.
“We must forward cautiously but with speed to deliver to our people. We must be accountable, lead with humility and always remember we are here to serve,” she stressed.
